Colossians 3:1–4 calls believers to set their minds on things above, where Christ is. This does not mean ignoring earthly responsibilities or becoming detached from real life. Paul connects heavenly focus with very practical changes in character, relationships, work, speech, and conduct.
To set your mind on things above is to allow the reality of Christ—His rule, His truth, and your life in Him—to shape the way you think and live today.
Start With Your Identity in Christ
Colossians 3 begins with what God has done before describing what believers should do. Those who belong to Christ have been raised with Him, and their lives are hidden with Christ in God.
A renewed mind grows from grace. We do not earn a new identity through perfect thoughts; we learn to think from the identity we have received in Christ.
Fill Your Mind With Scripture
Romans 12:2 connects transformation with renewed thinking. Read Scripture consistently and in context. Ask what a passage reveals about God, what it exposes in you, and what faithful response it requires.
Psalm 119:11 describes storing God’s Word in the heart. Memorization can help make truth available when temptation, fear, anger, or discouragement arrives.
Examine What Holds Your Attention
What repeatedly captures your attention will influence your desires. Social media, entertainment, conversations, and news are not spiritually neutral simply because they are ordinary.
Philippians 4:8 provides a useful filter: Is this true? Honourable? Just? Pure? Lovely? Commendable? Not everything difficult should be avoided, but not everything available deserves repeated access to your mind.
Bring Thoughts Under Truth
Setting your mind above does not mean suppressing emotions. Bring fear, grief, disappointment, and anger honestly to God. Then examine the conclusions attached to those feelings.
Ask: Is this thought true? Does it agree with Scripture? Is it leading me toward obedience and love, or toward resentment, panic, pride, and despair?
Seek God’s Kingdom in Daily Decisions
Jesus taught His followers to seek first God’s kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33). A heavenly mindset affects calendars, spending, relationships, ambitions, and the way we treat people.
Before a decision, consider not only “What do I want?” but also “What would honour Christ and serve others faithfully?”
Replace, Do Not Merely Remove
Trying not to think about something often keeps attention fixed on it. Replace destructive thought patterns with truth, prayer, gratitude, worship, useful work, and service.
Colossians 3 later tells believers to put away destructive behaviours and put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love. A mind set above becomes visible in conduct below.
A Simple Daily Practice
- Read a short passage before consuming other media.
- Choose one truth to remember throughout the day.
- Notice thoughts that contradict that truth.
- Turn the concern into prayer.
- Take one action that reflects Christ’s character.
